An applicant for a TRI rating shall:

  • hold a CPL, MPL or ATPL pilot licence on the applicable aircraft category;
  • for a TRI(MPA) certificate:
    • have completed 1500 hours flight time as a pilot on multi-pilot aeroplanes; and
    • have completed, within the 12 months preceding the date of application, 30 route sectors, including take-offs and landings, as PIC or co-pilot on the applicable aeroplane type, of which 15 sectors may be completed in an FFS representing that type;

SFI Certificate

An applicant for an SFI certificate shall:

  • hold or have held a CPL, MPL or ATPL in the appropriate aircraft category;
  • have completed the proficiency check for the issue of the specific aircraft type rating in an FFS representing the applicable type, within the 12 months preceding the application; and

      • 3 route sectors on the flight deck of the applicable aircraft type; or
      • 2 line-orientated flight training-based simulator sessions conducted by qualified flight crew on the flight deck of the applicable type. These simulator sessions shall include 2 flights of at least 2 hours each between 2 different aerodromes, and the associated pre-flight planning and de-briefing;

Groundschool

Teaching and Learning Course

The Teaching and Learning course consists of 25 hours instruction in the following topics.

  • The learning process;
  • The teaching process;
  • Training philosophies;
  • Techniques of applied instruction;
  • Student evaluation and testing;
  • Training program development;
  • Human performance and limitations relevant to flight instruction;
  • Specific hazards involved in simulating systems failures and malfunctions in the aircraft during flight;
  • Training administration.

The course also includes a further 8 hours of technical revision during which time, the Student Instructor will prepare and present a lecture on a technical subject.

Note: Student Instructors will not be required to undertake the full Teaching and Learning course if they hold, or have previously held, an instructor certificate or rating.

Where a Student Instructor is exempt from the full Teaching and Learning Phase, one day of ground school will be scheduled prior to the Technical Phase to revise subjects taught during the Teaching and Learning Phase. However, this requirement is waived if the Student Instructor holds or has previously held, a TRI/SFI on a multi-pilot aircraft type.

Simulator Training

Type Specific (Sim Only)

The Type Specific (Sim Only) course consists of two phases followed by the Assessment of Confidence (AOC).

The training covers typical items required for conversion to the ATR.

Phase 1 consists of three simulator sessions. The Student Instructor will brief and instruct specific exercises from the ATR42/72 type rating course syllabus with the Course Tutor role-playing a typical trainee. Students Instructors will be given the opportunity to fly demonstrations from both the left and right seat dependent on the particular exercise scenario. Student Instructors will then practice debriefing the trainee and report writing after the simulator session.

Phase 2 consists of one simulator session during which the Student Instructor will conduct training on a full type rating course under the supervision of the Course Tutor. This session will include a full briefing, conducting the full four-hour simulator session, followed by a debrief and report writing.

The final Assessment of Competence takes place during a ‘live’ full type rating course and will be conducted in accordance with AMC1 FCL.935.

Aircraft Upgrade

Removal of Sim Only Restriction

The course provides the training needed for the upgrade of a TRI (Sim Only) rating to TRI Simulator and Aircraft. It encompasses a total of four hours of ground school, one simulator session of two hours for each student instructor and a minimum of one hour of airborne training in an aircraft.

The course may be run with one or two Student Instructors and one Course Tutor.

The TRI AOC is completed on the aircraft and on completion, the Student Instructor shall have completed a minimum of 4 landings in an aeroplane.

Note that there is no practice of engine failures or other emergencies during this course. Therefore, instructors trained to this syllabus will have the following restriction on their TRI rating:

No instruction for abnormal or emergency procedures to be undertaken in an aircraft

Course entry requirements

Student Instructors must:

  • Hold a TRI (Sim only) qualification on the ATR 42/72.
  • Be in current flying practice, preferably in the role of Line Training Captain. As such they should be familiar with operation of the aircraft from either left hand or right hand pilot’s seat.

(Note that this phase may also be undertaken upon successful completion of Part 2 and prior to issue of the TRI rating by the Authority)
